Welcome to Black North Fiber
Welcome to Black North Fiber, home of the Gira's and their llamas and cashgora goats. Shortly after moving to our farm in 1994, we acquired our first two llamas, Silver Rose and Ladybird, who still live with us on our farm today. Our llama herd quickly grew through additional purchases and crias (baby llamas) born here at Black North Fiber.
Today, we have a foundation herd of 11 llamas, selected primarily for their quality fiber. In 1997, we added colored angora and cashmere goats to our farm and began breeding for cashgora goats. We have found that the cashgora fiber is easier to harvest than cashmere and the quality of the fiber remains higher throughout the goat's lifetime than the mohair fiber angora goats produce.
At Black North Fiber we do all of our own shearing, so the fiber is harvested at the correct length and highest quality. After washing and dyeing the fiber, we send it to fiber mills to have it processed into rovings, clouds and felted batts or finished products such as yarn, blankets and socks. We also craft gourd birdhouses out of several types of gourds grown at our farm. We hope you will enjoy browsing through our website.
